San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa 1912-2002
His name is considered a point of reference in 20th century Basque and Spanish composition. Francisco Escudero is also acknowledged as being one of the main artifices in the formation of a great part of the new school of Basque composers today.
He was born in San Sebastián (Guipuzcoa), and began his musical career in San Sebastian. He later moved to Madrid to study composition with Conrado del Campo. He then decided to move to the most important music Capitals of Europe, first to Paris under Paul Dukas and Paul Le Flem, and then to Munich, completing his studies under Albert Wolff.
The protagonist of two of the most interesting incursions into Basque Opera, Zigor (1963) and Gernika (1986), his compositions range from symphonic repertoire and chamber music to choral music – widely performed and popular amongst Basque choirs.
Although he is deeply interested in using material from Basque folklore, his music is not a mere nationalist vision but has an open approach, full of tonal and harmonic novelties coupled with a brilliant, unmistakable orchestration. His composition catalogue includes some of the most significant works in the history of 20th century Basque music. Likewise, his harmonizations of Basque folklore compositions have become extemely popular and are important points of reference in Basque choral repertoire.
